What documents do you need to rent a car in Marbella?

Published: · Updated: · Author: Marbiora
Quick answer

To rent a car with MARBIORA in Marbella you need a driving licence held for at least three years, a passport or national ID card and a credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit. Drivers must be 25 or over, and licences issued outside the EU also need an international driving permit.

What documents do you need to rent a car in Marbella?

Which documents are checked at handover?

Four documents are checked when the car is handed over to you, whether that happens at your villa, your hotel, a marina or the terminal of Málaga Airport. The list is the same for a weekend in a convertible and for a month in an SUV, and it applies to every driver named in the rental agreement, including the people who did not make the booking themselves.

Document Who needs it Why it is checked
Driving licence held for at least 3 years Every driver Insurance and Spanish traffic law
Passport or national ID card Every driver Identity of each person named in the agreement
Credit card in the main driver's name Main driver Security deposit
International driving permit Drivers with a licence issued outside the EU Standard translation of the licence

Our privacy policy explains why the licence and the identity document are checked at handover: the law and our insurer require it. The billing details for the rental agreement and the invoice are taken at the same moment, so nothing has to be sent in advance by email.

How old do you have to be to rent a luxury car in Marbella?

Every driver must be 25 or over and have held a full driving licence for at least three years. The rule is the same for every car in the fleet, from the Audi RS3 Sedan to the Lamborghini Huracán Performante, and it applies to additional drivers in exactly the same way as to the person who booked the car.

If you plan to share the driving, give us the names of the other drivers before delivery. They are insured on the same terms as the main driver, each of them shows a licence and an identity document at handover, and there is nothing else to sign on the day the car arrives.

Is a licence from your country valid in Spain?

Spain's traffic authority, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), states that a licence issued in a country of the European Union or the European Economic Area is valid for driving in Spain for as long as it remains in force. The European Economic Area adds Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to the member states of the EU.

For licences issued elsewhere, the DGT refers to article 21 of the General Drivers Regulation. The licence must be in force, the holder must have the age required in Spain for the equivalent Spanish licence, and no more than six months may have passed since the holder took up normal residence in Spain. The six months concern people who move to Spain, so a visitor on holiday is covered by the first two conditions.

When do you need an international driving permit?

An international driving permit is a document that presents your national licence in a standard multilingual format, so that a police officer or an insurer in another country can read it. It is issued in the country where your licence was issued, and it is valid only together with the original licence, never on its own.

We ask for an international driving permit from every driver whose licence was issued outside the EU. Bring both documents to the handover, along with your passport. If you are not sure whether your licence needs a permit, send us a photo of it by WhatsApp before you travel and we will tell you the same day.

Why do you need a credit card for the deposit?

A security deposit is an amount held on a card for the length of the rental and released once the car has been returned and checked. With us the deposit is held on a credit card in the main driver's name, which is why the card and the licence have to belong to the same person.

On the cars where the amount is set, the deposit is €4,000 or €5,000 depending on the model, and your booking confirmation states the exact figure together with the insurance excess before you pay anything. Our article on how the security deposit works explains the hold, the check at return and the release step by step.

What should you send us before the car arrives?

A booking takes one message, sent by WhatsApp, by phone, by email or through the request form on each car page. The more of the following it contains, the faster the car is confirmed and the shorter the handover at your door:

  • the car, the dates and the delivery address: villa, hotel, marina or the airport terminal;
  • the hour at which you would like to receive the car;
  • the names of all drivers, so they can be added to the agreement;
  • your route, if you plan to drive to Gibraltar or Portugal, so the trip can be arranged with the insurer;
  • a photo of each licence issued outside the EU, if you would like us to check it in advance.

We confirm availability and the final rate the same day, and no payment is taken on the website. You can write by WhatsApp, call or use the contact page. For stays of 30 days or more, the long-term rental page shows the monthly rates by category.
