What kind of car is the Ferrari Portofino?
- The Ferrari Portofino
- is a front-engined V8 grand tourer with a retractable hard top and a 2+2 cabin, unveiled in September 2017. According to the Wikipedia entry on the Ferrari Portofino, it produces 600 PS (592 hp), weighs 1,664 kg with fluids and is 80 kg lighter than the California it replaced.
Ferrari Portofino specifications
The Portofino Blue in our fleet is the original version of the model, built before the Portofino M arrived. The figures below are the ones that matter on a coast drive, from how quickly it gets up to speed to how much luggage it carries:
| Specification | Value |
|---|---|
| Engine | 3,855 cc twin-turbo V8 |
| Power | 600 PS |
| Torque | 760 Nm |
| 0 to 100 km/h | 3.5 s |
| Top speed | over 320 km/h |
| Seats | 4 (2+2 layout) |
| Boot | 292 litres |
| Length | 4,586 mm |
The two rear seats of the Portofino suit short trips, small children or hand luggage such as a weekend bag. For four adults on a long drive, a car with four full-size seats is more comfortable, and it is worth deciding that before you book.
Is this car a Portofino M?
No. The Portofino M is the updated version launched in 2021, and the car in our fleet is the original 2020 Portofino. The official Ferrari page for the Portofino M states that its engine makes 620 cv, 20 more than the Portofino, and that it brings an eight-speed gearbox in place of the seven-speed one.
On the road, you will hardly notice. Over a one or two day rental along the Costa del Sol, a 20 cv gap between the two versions changes nothing in everyday driving. Both cars share the 2+2 convertible body, the folding hard top and the grand touring character built for long drives with the roof down.
How does delivery to Málaga Airport work?
Delivery to the Málaga Airport terminal is free and as simple as delivery to a villa in Marbella, and our guide to car delivery at Málaga Airport covers it in more detail. For the Portofino the process follows these steps:
- Send the car, the dates, the hour and the name of each driver by WhatsApp, phone or email.
- We confirm availability, the total price, the deposit and the insurance excess in writing the same day.
- On your arrival day, the car waits at the terminal fuelled, valeted and photographed.
- The licence and ID are checked, the €5,000 deposit is held and the agreement is signed in about ten minutes.
- At the end of the rental we collect the car wherever you finish, including the airport.
If your flight lands late, one phone call moves the delivery hour, and the same person who confirmed the booking adjusts it. Delivery and collection can happen at any hour by arrangement, and the car can be delivered to the terminal and collected at a villa, or the other way round, for the same price.
What do you need to drive the Ferrari?
To drive the Portofino you need to be 25 or older and have held a driving licence for at least three years. At handover we check the licence and the passport or ID card of every driver, and the €5,000 deposit is held on a credit card in the main driver's name.
A licence issued in the European Union is valid in Spain with no extra paperwork, while licences from outside the EU also need an International Driving Permit, as the DGT guidance on driving with a foreign licence explains. Our guide to the car rental deposit in Marbella covers when the amount is released.
Which roof-down routes suit the Costa del Sol?
The Portofino is a car for unhurried driving with the roof open, and the Costa del Sol packs a lot of sea and mountain into short distances. With 150 km included per day, these routes fit into a single day without paying for extra kilometres:
- Marbella, the Golden Mile and Puerto Banús, for a seafront drive at sunset;
- Marbella to Estepona along the coast, with a stop in the old town;
- the mountain road from San Pedro Alcántara up to Ronda, with bends and views of the sierra;
- Marbella towards Sotogrande and its marina, with notice if you want to finish there.
On Spanish roads the general limit for cars is 120 km/h on motorways and dual carriageways and 90 km/h on conventional roads, according to the DGT note on speed enforcement. In towns the limit drops to 50, 30 or 20 km/h depending on the type of street. With the roof down, you rarely want more.
Gibraltar and Portugal are possible if the trip is agreed with the insurer in advance, so mention the route when you book. The ferry to Morocco, track days and driving courses are not allowed with any car in the fleet.
What happens if you drive more than 150 km a day?
Each kilometre above the daily 150 km costs €5. The allowance adds up by day: 300 km over two days, 450 km over three days and 1,050 km over a week. The maths is simple. A day with 200 km on the clock means 50 extra kilometres, which is €250 on top of the day rate.
If you plan a longer drive, say up to Ronda and back along the coast, tell us when you book and we will work out the mileage with you. Charges that depend on use, such as extra kilometres or refuelling, are set out in the rental agreement before you sign, so there are no surprise charges when the car goes back.
Which other cars can you book if the Portofino is taken?
If the Portofino Blue is not free on your dates, the coast fleet has two grand touring alternatives based in Marbella. Both come on the same terms, with comprehensive insurance, 150 km per day and free delivery to Málaga Airport:
- the Porsche 992 Carrera 4S Targa, from €800 for one day, with the Targa roof for open-air driving;
- the Bentley Continental GT, from €1,250 for one day and €900 per day on rentals of 30 days or more, with a €5,000 deposit.

To check the Portofino's availability on your dates or the price of a multi-day rental, write to us from the contact page or on WhatsApp. We reply the same day with the full price in writing, and nothing is charged on the website.
